Flow Classification
Hydrants assessed per NFPA 291 flow classification
NFPA 25 requires annual inspection and flow testing of all private fire hydrants.
Untested hydrants may deliver inadequate flow — or fail entirely — when the fire department needs them most.
Common in warm climates where freezing is not a concern. Water is always present in the barrel. Each outlet has its own valve.
Used in climates where freezing is possible. The main valve is below the frost line; the barrel drains automatically when the hydrant is closed.
Located on private property to supplement public water supply for fire suppression. Subject to the same NFPA 25 inspection requirements as public hydrants.
Mounted on building exteriors, typically connected to the building's fire suppression water supply. Common in urban areas with limited street access.

After Any Event
Vegetation, parked vehicles, or stored materials blocking hydrant access are a critical fire safety violation. Clear access is required at all times.
Damaged nozzle threads prevent fire hose connection. We inspect all outlets and replace damaged caps and nozzle components.
NFPA 291 recommends hydrants be color-coded by available flow rate. Incorrect or missing color coding can delay fire department response.
Tuberculation, main breaks, or valve issues can reduce available flow below design requirements. Annual flow testing identifies degraded performance.
Leaks at the barrel, caps, or operating stem waste water and indicate internal wear. We identify leaks and recommend repair or replacement.
Operating nuts and caps that are difficult to turn can delay fire department access during an emergency. We lubricate and free all components.
