ANNUAL TESTING REQUIRED

Backflow Preventer Testing & Inspection

Backflow preventers protect the public water supply from contamination caused by pressure changes in your plumbing system. Titan Life Safety provides certified annual testing for fire suppression, domestic, and irrigation lines across the Atlanta Metro area.

Repairs & Rebuilds

Failed assemblies repaired or replaced same visit when parts are available

Most Georgia jurisdictions require annual backflow preventer testing and report submission to the local water authority.

Failure to test can result in fines, service interruption, or liability for contamination.
WHY IT MATTERS

Protecting the Public Water Supply

Backflow occurs when water flows in the reverse direction — from your property back into the public water main. This can happen due to a sudden drop in water pressure (back-siphonage) or when your system pressure exceeds the supply pressure (backpressure).

Without a properly functioning backflow preventer, chemicals from irrigation systems, contaminants from fire suppression lines, or bacteria from stagnant water can enter the drinking water supply — posing a serious public health risk and significant liability for property owners.

Fire suppression lines (wet and dry pipe sprinkler systems)
Commercial and residential irrigation systems
Domestic water service connections
Boiler and HVAC makeup water lines
Chemical injection systems
Car wash and industrial process connections

Backflow preventers are required on all of the above connection types in most Georgia jurisdictions.

WHAT WE TEST

All Backflow Preventer Assembly Types

We test and service all types of backflow prevention assemblies across fire, domestic, and irrigation applications.

Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ)

The highest level of backflow protection. Required for high-hazard connections such as irrigation systems with chemical injection, fire suppression lines, and industrial processes. Contains two independently acting check valves and a differential pressure relief valve.

Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA)

Used for low-to-moderate hazard applications such as commercial irrigation and fire sprinkler systems without chemical additives. Contains two independently acting check valves and is testable in place.

Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB)

Commonly used on irrigation systems. Protects against back-siphonage but not backpressure. Must be installed above the highest downstream outlet.

Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB)

The simplest form of backflow prevention. Used on individual hose bibs and low-hazard irrigation zones. Not testable and cannot be used where continuous pressure is applied.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

When Testing Is Required

Annual testing is the baseline requirement — but testing is also required after any repair or following a known backflow event.

Annual

  • Full differential pressure test
  • Check valve seating and sealing
  • Relief valve operation (RPZ assemblies)
  • Shutoff valve operation
  • Visual inspection for corrosion or damage
  • Test results submitted to local water authority

After Any Repair

  • Re-test following any repair or replacement
  • Verify correct reassembly
  • Confirm pressure readings within spec
  • Updated documentation filed

After Backflow Event

  • Full system inspection
  • Contamination risk assessment
  • Component replacement if required
  • Notification to water authority if required
WHAT WE FIND

Common Backflow Preventer Issues

Our certified testers identify problems that routine visual checks miss. Here's what we commonly find.

Failed Check Valves

Check valves can foul with debris or wear over time, allowing contaminated water to flow backward into the public supply.

Corroded or Damaged Body

Assemblies exposed to the elements or installed in wet vaults are prone to corrosion. We identify deterioration before it causes failure.

Relief Valve Discharge

A continuously discharging relief valve on an RPZ assembly indicates a failed check valve — a common finding that requires immediate repair.

Improper Installation

Backflow preventers installed at the wrong elevation, orientation, or location are a frequent code violation we identify and document.

Missing or Expired Test Reports

Many jurisdictions require annual test reports to be filed with the water authority. We handle the paperwork and submission for you.

Frozen or Unprotected Assemblies

Outdoor assemblies must be protected from freezing. We identify unprotected installations and recommend appropriate enclosures.

THE PROCESS

What to Expect on Test Day

Our certified testers arrive with calibrated differential pressure gauges and all required documentation. Testing typically takes 30–60 minutes per assembly. We handle the report submission to your water authority so you don't have to.

01

Schedule & Locate

We confirm your appointment and identify all backflow preventer assemblies on your property — fire, domestic, and irrigation.

02

Certified Testing

Each assembly is tested using calibrated gauges per the manufacturer spec and local water authority requirements.

03

Report & Submission

You receive a complete test report. We submit results to your local water authority on your behalf.

04

Repair If Needed

Failed assemblies are repaired or rebuilt on the spot when parts are available, with a follow-up test to confirm compliance.
